Custom tools

Simple web tools that save you time or make life easier for your customers. They work in any web browser, on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.

Prices include everything; no VAT.

What kind of tools?

Quote calculators

Customers answer a few questions, see a price guide, and send you their details. Fewer “how much would it cost?” messages to answer by hand.

Booking request forms

Customers choose a service and a time that suits them and send a request. You confirm it, so you stay in charge of your diary.

Order forms

A tidy way to take orders for collection or delivery, with everything you need asked up front, instead of details scattered across messages.

Customer portals

A private page where each customer can log in to see their own documents, bookings or the progress of their job.

Simple stock systems

Keep track of what you have, what's running low and what needs ordering, from your phone or a computer.

Simple staff systems

Rotas, availability or hours in one place that staff can check on their phones, instead of a group chat and a spreadsheet.

Three examples, in words

These are made-up examples to show the idea. They are not client projects.

A window cleaner's quote calculator

On the website, a customer picks their type of house, the number of windows and how often they'd like a clean. They see a price guide straight away and can send their address and details with one tap. The window cleaner gets an email with everything needed to confirm the price.

A football club's kit order form

Parents choose the item, size and initials, and see the total. The club gets one tidy list of every order, ready to send to the supplier, instead of collecting orders by text message.

A cafe's staff rota

The owner sets the week's shifts on a computer. Staff check them on their phones and can mark when they're not available. Nobody needs to install anything.

How scoping works: the written description

Custom work goes wrong when nobody wrote down what was agreed. So every tool starts with a written description, and nothing is built until you've agreed it.

  1. Tell me the problem

What takes up your time, or what your customers keep asking for. You don't need to know what the solution looks like.

  2. Agree the written description

I write down exactly what the tool will do: who uses it, each screen, what it stores, what it won't do, the price and when it will be ready. You read it, ask questions and agree it before any work starts.

  3. Test it, then it goes live

You try the tool before it goes live and tell me anything that doesn't match the description. Then a monthly support plan keeps it running. It runs in accounts in your own name.

Anything not in the written description is extra. If you'd like it, I'll tell you the price first, and nothing is added without your OK.

Prices

  • Simple toolfrom £300For example, a quote calculator, a booking request form or an order form.
  • Bigger tools£750 to £1,500For example, a customer portal, or a simple stock or staff system.
  • Monthly support planfrom £20/monthKeeps your tool running, secure and working, with its running costs checked each month.

The exact price is in the written description, so you know it before you agree. Payment: half up front, half when it goes live. The support plan is paid monthly in advance.

Prices include everything; no VAT.

What's not offered

I don't build phone apps for the App Store or Google Play: they cost far more to build and keep updated, and for most small businesses a web tool that opens on any phone does the same job.

Your customers' details

If a tool stores details about your customers or staff, you're in charge of that information and I look after it on your behalf, under a written data processing agreement. See the terms and the privacy notice.

Got a job a simple tool could take off your hands?

Describe it in a few lines. I'll reply by email and tell you honestly whether a tool would help, and roughly what it would cost.
